It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Soke Michael J. LaMonica, founder of the North American Hakko Denshin Ryu Federation, on Wednesday, October 16, 2024. Soke LaMonica was more than just an extraordinary martial artist—he was a mentor, leader, and friend to countless people. His contributions to the world of Hakko Denshin Ryu Jujutsu are immeasurable, and his teachings will continue to guide us for generations to come.
Beyond his skill, Soke LaMonica taught us the true essence of martial arts—how to live with honor, humility, and compassion. He leaves behind a family both on and off the mats, all of whom are forever grateful for the time spent learning from him.
Funeral services will be held at St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church in Mogadore, Ohio, on October 25, with interment following at Rose Hill Cemetery.
We will continue to honor Soke LaMonica’s legacy by passing on the knowledge he shared with us, ensuring that his spirit remains alive through our practice.
