One of the most feared self-defense situations is against an armed attacker. Hakko Denshin Ryu has a set of techniques specifically designed to defend against armed attackers. Our current Headmaster, Soke LaMonica, spent over 40 years in law enforcement and knows firsthand the reliability of these defenses. All techniques of Hakko Denshin Ryu were adapted from Takeda Clan aiki-jujutsu. That system of unarmed combat was developed for Samurai who were, for various reasons, without a weapon of their own.
The movements and techniques for gun and knife defense depend upon understanding of waza. Therefore, we wait to train our students gun and knife defense until a student reaches Brown belt. That way we can be sure that a student has the necessary skill to defend themselves in such a dire circumstance.
